The future of applications is collaborative, intelligent, autonomous and stateful. So why are we still building stateless, request-driven REST applications? This session presents a new model for building scalable, autonomous applications using stateful Web Agents and streaming APIs.

In order to conquer the massive volumes of streaming data being created at the edge, it’s critical to build applications which are optimized for learning and deriving insights locally, without relying on the cloud. Using Swim, developers and data scientists can build and analyze stateful models of the real-world, enabling applications to analyze, learn and deliver insights from data streams.

Stateful Web Agents make it possible to build models of even the most complex real-world systems from streaming data.  Essentially, a model is a distributed graph of concurrent web agents – each acting as a stateful “digital twin” that processes streaming data from a real-world source.  Web agents link to one another to represent relationships discovered in the data, enabling them to share state and collaborate to compute insights. Web agents stream their outputs to users and applications in real-time.

Web agents help solve challenges of model building, data reduction, cleaning and labeling, analysis, learning and prediction: They continuously process streaming data, update their state, compute and stream insights over their links, making the graph a live, stateful, computational model. This enables developers and data scientists to run Machine Learning libraries on top of streaming data to identify real-time insights and self-train models on-the-fly. The Swim library and several example applications are available as open source software, maintained by the Swim community.
