As a consulting Product Manager, I have watched many software teams succeed and fail, and have spent a good portion of my recent career trying to understand the factors that contribute to each outcome. One of my biggest breakthroughs in creating happy and successful software teams was to dedicate more time to thoughtful, product and user onboarding for developers. Companies tend to onboard developers based on a stereotype— the hyper-logical, introverted, individual who’s ideal day is one where they sit at a computer and write as much code as possible. However, optimizing towards getting individuals shipping code as quickly as possible does a great disservice to our products and teams.  In this talk I will discuss (a) How we traditionally onboard developers based on a stereotypical idea of what they want and need out of their jobs, (b) Specific tactics for inserting empathy and context into the developer onboarding experience, and lastly (c) how this benefits both our products and teams.
